ferry and railway docks at Mackinaw City, Michigan

Today three ferry companies operate out of Mackinaw City (actually a quite small town), connecting tourists and commuters to Mackinac Island: north and south Arnold Line, Sheplers Ferry and the Star Line.

The railway to here is a thing of the past, however. In the early 1980s the state created the Michigan Central Railroad from the ill-fated Penn Central line, but it ceased within a few years. Today the North Central State Trail utilises 62 miles (101 km) of it.
