photos of the CF-18 Lethbridge, Canada, accident

Relevant given the crash on Friday of a Hornet into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia, extensive photos, here are photos of the CF-18 Lethbridge accident in Alberta, 23 July 2010.

Experts say it was probably a compressor stall on the number 1 engine. The supersonic air coming from overflow panels on top seems to indicate this but it also adds to the puzzle. It looks like the left engine has the nozzles open so that one was either in AB, or flamed out. The impact photo has flame shooting out of the left engine.  Maybe the right engine was flamed out and the left in AB (or reheat as the British call it) to compensate for loss of thrust.

Thanks to Cliff for sending these in.
