steam through Rolleston, 1956


Another rather poxy photo that NZ Railfan types won't approve of (not that anyone should care about them), this shows an AB steam locomotive in charge of what we think was officially a mixed train from the Midland Line to Christchurch, even though there are no goods wagons in it.  Rolleston was and still is the junction station with the South Island Main Trunk; the yard layout here was completely rebuilt in 1969.  For more, see our books.
